Remote Sales Jobs: How the Pay Really Works Before You Sign
Educational information, not financial, tax or legal advice. Pay figures are published medians and employer postings, not a promise of what you will earn. Read our disclaimer.
Remote sales jobs are some of the best-paid work-from-home roles you can get without a license, and also the easiest place to end up working for free. The difference is almost never the product or the company name; it is the pay structure. A role with a real base salary pays you in a bad month. A commission-only "opportunity" pays you nothing in a bad month, and some of them charge you to start. This page explains how each structure works, what the roles are, what employers post, and the questions that separate a sales job from a sales pitch aimed at you.
What remote sales jobs pay, and how much of it is guaranteed
Most remote sales roles pay a base salary plus commission or a bonus, and the posted number is not always the guaranteed part. The Bureau of Labor Statistics says that for wholesale and manufacturing sales representatives, most employers use a combination of salary and commissions or salary plus bonuses, with commissions usually based on a percentage of sales.
The BLS national median for that occupation was $76,460 a year ($36.76 an hour) in May 2025: $104,920 for reps selling technical and scientific products, $72,080 for everything else. Those medians cover every rep, not only remote ones.
When we counted on October 13, 2026, our sales feed held 540 US-eligible remote listings, 518 of them open only to US applicants. Of those, 286 posted a pay figure in US dollars. Taking the median of the low ends and the median of the high ends of those ranges gives a typical posted range of about $77,725 to $110,000 a year.

One caution: a range might be base pay, or "on-target earnings" (OTE), which assumes you hit quota. Genesys posted a remote BDR role with an anticipated base range of $48,600 to $85,400, with commission possibly on top. Charlie Health posted an inside sales role with a target base of $54,000 to $60,000 but target total cash of $66,000 to $84,000. Before comparing offers, ask which number is guaranteed.
Base plus commission, commission-heavy, or commission-only: the three pay structures
Every sales offer falls into one of three shapes, and each puts a different amount of risk on you.
| Structure | How you're paid | In a bad month | Listing wording |
|---|---|---|---|
| Base plus commission | Salary or wage, plus commission or bonus | You still get the base | "Base $X plus commission", "OTE $Y" |
| Commission-heavy | Small base, most pay tied to quota | Pay drops sharply, not to zero | OTE far above base, a "draw" |
| Commission-only | Nothing until you close | You earn nothing, may owe expenses | "Unlimited earning potential", "be your own boss" |
Why commission-only looks different for remote work
Federal minimum-wage law has a specific exemption for outside sales employees, people who sell while "customarily and regularly engaged away from the employer's place or places of business." The Labor Department's fact sheet says that exemption covers both minimum wage and overtime, but also that outside sales does not include sales made by mail, telephone or the Internet unless those contacts are only an adjunct to in-person calls.
Selling by phone and video from home is not outside sales. So if an offer calls you an employee but promises commission only, ask how they make sure you earn at least the federal minimum wage of $7.25 an hour. If it calls you an independent contractor, read the IRS page on employee versus contractor status, which looks at how much the company controls your work.
Why our job board leaves commission-only recruiting out
Our board drops two kinds of sales "jobs" on purpose: commission-only insurance-agent recruiting and home-based travel-agent ("vacation booker") programs, because they commonly charge recruits. Some insurance agencies offer real careers, but a commission-only recruiting ad is a different deal from a salaried job, and mixing them in would distort the pay figures.
The roles: SDR, BDR, account executive, inside sales and customer success
Remote sales teams split the work into stages, and each title tells you which stage you'd own. Of the 540 listings we counted on October 13, 2026, 153 were tagged entry-level, 252 mid-level and 116 senior, with the rest manager or director roles.
Sales development representative (SDR) and business development representative (BDR)
This is the usual first rung. SDRs and BDRs find and qualify prospects, then book meetings for someone else to close. A Digitalzone SDR posting set weekly and monthly quotas for qualified meetings booked through calls, emails and LinkedIn, and asked for 2 to 5 years of sales, customer service or related experience. Genesys asked BDR applicants for 1 to 3+ years.
Inside sales representative
Inside sales reps handle the whole sale by phone, email and video, often for smaller deals or inbound leads. Charlie Health's posting described high call volume and Salesforce records, and asked for a bachelor's degree and 1 to 5 years of sales experience.
Account executive (AE)
Account executives run demos, negotiate and close, and carry the biggest quotas. Titles that name a city ("Account Executive - Milwaukee, WI") usually mean a territory you must live in or travel to.
Customer success and account management with a quota
If a customer success listing mentions quota, renewals or expansion revenue, it is a sales role; ask how much of the pay is variable.

Patterns from our October 13, 2026 count:
- They are mostly full-time. 479 listings were tagged "Full Time" (plus 39 tagged "Full-Time"), 16 were contractor roles and only 3 were part-time. Sales is a poor fit if you need a few flexible hours; our part-time remote jobs page is a better starting point.
- No single employer dominates. The top names were Silver Bell Group (6 listings), then Check Point Software, Gartner, RR Donnelley and Salesforce (5 each).
- Check the location line. "Remote" can mean anywhere in the US, one time zone, or one territory.
Red flags in work from home sales jobs: paying to join, buying leads, recruiting friends
The most common trap in work from home sales jobs is a business you buy, dressed up as a job you're hired for. Three signs give it away.
- You pay before you earn. The FTC says honest employers will never ask you to pay to get a job. A starter kit, training course or monthly fee makes you the customer.
- You buy your own leads. A real employer supplies leads or a territory. The FTC's Business Opportunity Rule covers sellers who get you to make a required payment to start a new business, including those promising customers or accounts. They must give you a one-page disclosure document at least seven days before you pay, and it is illegal for them to say they're offering a job when they're selling a business.
- Your income depends on recruiting. The FTC says most people who join legitimate MLMs make little or no money, and lists promoters who stress recruiting new distributors as a warning sign.
Earnings screenshots are another tell; the FTC says to insist on proof in writing for earnings claims. For the full list of warning signs and a quick checker, see our guide to work from home scams.
Getting hired for a remote sales role without sales experience
You can break into remote sales without a sales title, but the postings we read still asked for some experience. Realistic routes in:
- From customer service. Support work builds the same skills, and Digitalzone's SDR posting counted it. Our guide to customer service remote jobs covers getting hired there first.
- From an entry-level SDR seat. Look for SDR, BDR or "associate" titles; our page on entry level remote jobs explains what "entry level" means in a listing.
- From in-person sales. Retail or car sales count. Put them in numbers: calls a day, conversion rate, average sale.
The postings keep asking for a CRM such as Salesforce, outreach by calls, email and LinkedIn, and meeting weekly targets.
Questions to ask before you accept any sales offer
A legitimate employer will answer all of these in writing. Vague answers are an answer too.
- What is the guaranteed base? Get it separately from OTE.
- What share of the team hit quota last year?
- Is there a draw, and do I repay it if I miss?
- Who supplies the leads? Not a package you buy.
- Am I an employee (W-2) or a contractor (1099)?
- Are commissions clawed back if a customer cancels?
- Does anything cost me money? If yes, walk away.
Selling isn't the only way to earn from your laptop. Our guide to how to make money from home compares remote jobs, side hustles and selling, and the remote jobs hub lists every job family we track.
