Remote Accounting Jobs: The Role Ladder From Bookkeeper to CPA, With Real Pay

Remote accounting jobs are bookkeeping, payables, payroll, tax and accounting roles done from a home office rather than a finance department. The work is the same as in the office: recording transactions, reconciling accounts, running payroll and preparing returns. What changes is that employers have to trust you with financial systems they can't watch over your shoulder. That trust is why remote openings lean toward experienced staff. Below, we lay out the roles from clerk to CPA with what each asks for, quote pay from the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), explain the IRS rule behind seasonal tax work and show what our October 13, 2026 count of listings found.

Who gets hired for accounting work from home: experienced people, mostly

There is plenty of remote accounting work, but most of it goes to people who have already done the job in an office. When we counted on October 13, 2026, we found 417 US-eligible accounting and bookkeeping listings posted in the previous 30 days, 401 of them open only to US residents. Only 55 were tagged entry-level. Mid-level roles made up 185, senior roles 146, managers 57 and directors 6.

Most were employee jobs: 351 full-time, 28 contract, 24 part-time, 4 temporary and 5 volunteer.

Counted by HowToMakeMoneyFromHome.online from the 382 US-eligible accounting and bookkeeping listings on Himalayas and Jobicy on Oct 17, 2026, after removing duplicates, expired posts and scam-pattern titles. Pay medians use only listings that state a USD wage; hourly and yearly figures are the employers' own posted ranges. Recounted every day.

Of the 166 listings that posted pay, the median annualised range was $80,157 to $104,500, which reflects how senior the pool was. Only 4 gave an hourly rate, too few to summarise.

The most frequent posters were Baker Tilly (6 listings), mercor (5), Access Offshoring Philippines (5), Tahche Outsourcing Services (5), KMC Solutions (4), RecruitMyMom (4), Outsource Access (4) and Scale-X Solutions (4), several of them outsourcing or staffing firms. Titles ran from "Bookkeeper and Accountant" to "Senior SEC Reporting & Technical Accounting Manager."

The accounting role ladder compared, from AP clerk to tax preparer

The table shows five rungs, what each asks for according to BLS or the IRS, and the BLS May 2025 national median for the closest occupation where our data has one.

Individual employers often ask for more than these minimums, such as a particular accounting system or a year of experience. Where we say "not in our pay data", we have not verified a figure, so we leave it blank.

BLS projects clerk employment to decline 6% from 2025 to 2035, while accountants and auditors grow 5%. The clerk rungs are an entry point; the money and demand sit higher up.

Remote bookkeeping jobs: the most realistic way in

Bookkeeping is where most people without an accounting degree get started. BLS describes the work as computing, classifying and recording data "to help organizations keep complete and accurate financial records." It lists "some college, no degree" as the typical entry education. It also says clerks "typically receive training on the job," usually moderate-term on-the-job training. Professional certification exists, but BLS calls it "not usually required."

BLS also says clerks "usually work in an office setting." Remote bookkeeping jobs exist, but you usually earn them with a track record, by one of two routes:

  1. Employee route. Take an on-site or hybrid clerk role, learn the employer's accounting system, then apply for remote bookkeeping jobs with that system on your résumé. Postings for remote roles in our count were overwhelmingly full-time employee jobs.
  2. Freelance route. Keep books for a few small businesses as an independent contractor. That makes you self-employed for tax purposes, and our guide to how to start a side business covers the structure, EIN and estimated-tax steps. Our page on freelance jobs for beginners online explains how to find the first clients.

Expect busy seasons: BLS notes clerks "may work extra hours to meet deadlines at the end of the fiscal year, during tax time." Part-time roles were scarce in our count (24 of 417); our part time remote jobs page covers part-time options across fields.

Accounts payable remote jobs, payroll and staff accountant roles

In accounts payable you match invoices to purchase orders, get approvals, schedule payments and answer vendor questions. Accounts receivable is the mirror image: invoicing customers and following up on late payments. The closest BLS occupation for both is the clerk group with the $24.36 median above.

Payroll is its own specialty. Our count included titles such as "Payroll Specialist," "Temporary Payroll Manager" and an "Oracle HCM Consultant - Core HR and Payroll." That last one is a reminder that some payroll listings are really software-implementation jobs. Read the duties, not only the title.

The staff accountant step

BLS lists a bachelor's degree as typical entry education for accountants and auditors. It puts their May 2025 median at $40.23 an hour, or $83,680 a year. On remote work it is direct: "Most accountants and auditors work in offices, but some work from home."

Where the CPA fits

Some of the highest-paid listings in our count named the CPA, such as one titled "Certified Public Accountant - Fully Remote | Upto $120/hr." BLS says "becoming a CPA requires passing a national exam and meeting other state requirements." Those state rules vary, so check your state board of accountancy rather than relying on a summary. The CPA is not needed for clerk, bookkeeper or most staff accountant roles. It is what separates a lot of the senior and manager listings from everything below them.

Seasonal tax preparation from home: the PTIN rule

Tax preparation is the most seasonal corner of accounting, and the rule that governs it is federal. The IRS says "anyone who prepares or assists in preparing federal tax returns for compensation" must have a preparer tax identification number (PTIN). That person "must have a valid 2026 PTIN before preparing returns." The IRS lists the fee as $18.75, non-refundable, and renewals also cost $18.75.

A PTIN alone gives you narrow rights. The IRS says preparers with only a PTIN "are authorized to prepare tax returns" but "have no authority to represent clients before the IRS" (apart from returns filed in 2015 or earlier). Two optional steps add more:

  • Annual Filing Season Program (AFSP). The IRS describes it as a program that "recognizes the efforts of return preparers who are generally not attorneys" and was "designed to encourage education and filing season readiness." Participants are the only non-credentialed preparers with limited representation rights.
  • Enrolled agent. The IRS steps are to get a PTIN and then "achieve passing scores on all three parts of the SEE within three years." The SEE is the Special Enrollment Examination. The IRS page does not list the enrollment fee amount, so we don't either.

Before you sign on with any seasonal tax company, check that it expects you to hold your own PTIN. If an outfit offers to "handle" the PTIN for a fee, walk away. The IRS issues it directly, at the price above.

Three checks matter more in accounting than in most remote fields:

  1. Who actually employs you. Our count included several outsourcing and staffing firms among the top posters. That isn't a red flag, but the employment type ("Contractor" vs "Full Time") and the real client should be clear before you accept.
  2. Whether the money flows through you. The FTC says no honest employer will send you a check to deposit and then ask you to send part of the money on or buy gift cards with it. Fake "payment processing" jobs dress this scam up in accounting language.
  3. When they ask for your details. The FTC warns that scammers ask for your Social Security or bank number for "employment paperwork" before any interview. Real employers ask after they've hired you.

Our work from home scams page has a checker for these signs. The remote jobs hub compares every job family we track, and our guide on how to make money from home sets accounting beside the other options. With no finance background yet, entry level remote jobs lists first-career roles that can lead into a finance team.

Questions people ask

Can you do accounting from home with no experience?
Rarely at first. Of the 417 accounting and bookkeeping listings we counted on October 13, 2026, only 55 were tagged entry-level. BLS says bookkeeping clerks usually learn on the job and typically work in an office. The common path is an on-site or hybrid clerk role first, or a few small freelance bookkeeping clients, then a move to remote work with that experience on your résumé.
Do I need a degree for remote accounting jobs?
Not for every rung. BLS lists "some college, no degree" as typical for bookkeeping, accounting and auditing clerks, and says certification is "not usually required." For accountants and auditors, BLS lists a bachelor's degree as the typical entry education. Tax preparers need a PTIN from the IRS, but there is no federal degree requirement to prepare returns for pay.
How much do remote bookkeepers make?
The BLS May 2025 national median for bookkeeping, accounting and auditing clerks is $24.36 an hour, or $50,670 a year. That median covers all workers in the occupation, not only remote ones. In our October 13, 2026 count, the 166 accounting listings that posted pay had a median annualised range of $80,157 to $104,500. Senior roles pull that figure up.
What do accounts payable remote jobs involve?
Accounts payable staff record and pay a company's bills. The work means matching invoices to purchase orders, getting approvals, scheduling payments and answering vendor questions, usually inside the company's accounting system. It is clerical work that BLS groups with bookkeeping and auditing clerks, whose May 2025 median is $24.36 an hour.
Do I need a PTIN to be a seasonal tax preparer?
Yes, if you are paid. The IRS says anyone who prepares or assists in preparing federal tax returns for compensation must have a valid PTIN before preparing returns, and lists the fee as $18.75 (non-refundable, same for renewals). A PTIN alone lets you prepare returns but not represent clients before the IRS.
Do remote accounting jobs require a CPA?
Most do not. Clerk, bookkeeper, payroll and many staff accountant roles have no CPA requirement. The CPA shows up in senior, manager and specialist listings, including one in our count titled "Certified Public Accountant - Fully Remote | Upto $120/hr." BLS says becoming a CPA requires passing a national exam and meeting other state requirements, and those rules differ by state, so check with your state board.
Are remote accounting jobs full-time or part-time?
Mostly full-time. In our October 13, 2026 count, 351 of 417 accounting listings were full-time, 28 contract, 24 part-time and 4 temporary, with 5 volunteer roles. BLS also says most bookkeeping clerks work full time, with extra hours at fiscal year-end and tax time.
Is bookkeeping a declining job?
BLS projects employment of bookkeeping, accounting and auditing clerks to decline 6% from 2025 to 2035. For accountants and auditors it projects 5% growth, which it rates faster than average. Clerk jobs still open up, but the long-term direction favors moving up the ladder.
How can I tell if a remote accounting job is fake?
Watch where the money goes. The FTC says no honest employer sends you a check to deposit and then asks you to forward part of it or buy gift cards. That is the usual shape of fake "payment processing" jobs. Real employers also don't ask for your Social Security or bank number before an interview, and never charge you for training or software. When in doubt, find the job on the company's own careers site.
