Chat Support Jobs: What the Work Is and How to Find Real Openings
Educational information, not financial, tax or legal advice. Pay figures are published medians and employer postings, not a promise of what you will earn. Read our disclaimer.
Chat support jobs are customer service roles where you help customers through a live chat window, and often email or text messages too, instead of by phone. The Bureau of Labor Statistics lists live chat among the ways customer service representatives work, alongside phone, email and social media, and says working from home is possible at some companies. Below: what the job involves, which skills employers test, what real postings pay, and why genuine text-only openings are rarer than ads suggest. It is part of our remote jobs section.
The short answer: real but scarce, and paid like customer service
Chat agents are customer service representatives who type instead of talk, so the pay benchmark is the same. BLS puts the median for customer service representatives at $21.53 an hour, or $44,770 a year, in May 2025. That figure covers every representative, not only remote or chat-only workers.
Openings are the harder part. When we counted on October 13, 2026, our job feed held only 16 US-eligible chat listings, against 310 in our customer service feed. Only two of the 16 published a salary, and both were annual ranges: $45,900 to $61,000 for a "Chat Support" role at Net2Source, and $51,500 to $65,300 for a "Chat & Email Support Agent" at Invicta Software.
The one hourly figure we found came from the posting itself. Advance Auto Parts listed a "good faith estimate" of $14.25 to $19.00 an hour for a new digital-support agent handling chat, email and SMS.

What a chat agent does during a shift
The duties match the BLS list for the occupation, from answering questions and taking orders to handling returns and recording the details of each contact. Only the channel differs. Here is how three postings describe it:
- Norwegian Cruise Line (Web Chat Consultant): "Respond to inbound chats in a timely manner", attending to live chats that guests start on the company website.
- Journeys (Chat Support Representative): resolve customer inquiries about orders, with order tracking, cancellations and account and payment handling across chats, texts and emails.
- Advance Auto Parts (Digital Support): respond "via chat, email, and SMS", guide customers through online shopping and document each interaction in the case system.
Several conversations at once
The biggest difference from phone work is that you may have more than one chat window open. Advance Auto Parts asks agents to "Manage multiple conversations simultaneously", and Inktel wants someone "Experienced in handling multiple chats at any given time". Neither posting gives a number, and none of the postings we read did. If an interviewer mentions a figure, ask how it changes during training.
Tickets and email
A chat that can't be solved live usually becomes a ticket or an email, so part of the day goes to writing follow-ups and case notes in a help-desk system. None of the postings here required experience with a specific software product.
The skills employers test: writing, typing speed and judgment
Chat hiring screens your writing because customers judge the company by it. Norwegian Cruise Line asks for "Strong written skills that lend to clear and concise text-based communication". Typing speed is the one skill with a hard number, and it varies widely. These are the minimums the postings themselves state:
| Employer and role | Channel | Typing minimum stated |
|---|---|---|
| Inktel, Chat/Phone Support Specialist | Chat and phone | 45–55 wpm |
| Advance Auto Parts, Digital Support agent | Chat, email, SMS | 30 wpm |
| Transcom, work-from-home advisor | Customer and technical support | 30 wpm |
| TP, Customer Service Representative | Phone-led | 25 wpm |
| Norwegian, Journeys | Chat | Not stated |
Accuracy matters as much as speed, because a typo in an order number creates a second problem. Practice on a free typing test until you clear the highest bar in that table with few errors. Beyond typing, interviewers look for short, complete answers, a tone that fits the customer, and knowing when to hand a case off: BLS lists referring customers to supervisors or more experienced employees as a core duty.

When we counted on October 13, 2026, the 16 listings were few enough to read one by one:
- 14 were full-time, one was a contractor role and one part-time. Chat work is rarely a flexible side gig.
- Several titles were not chat-only. Three named phone in the title: "Email, Chat, & Phone", "Chat/Phone" and "Phone, Chat, Email". Four named email, and one also named SMS.
- One role appeared twice. The same Journeys "Chat Support Representative - Temp-to-Hire (Work From Home)" was listed once under Journeys and once under Genesco, so there were 15 distinct roles.
- One listing failed our own checks. We explain it in the scams section below.
Postings leave our feed after 30 days, so the board above will show a different set by the time you read this.
How to find non-phone customer service jobs
Most "customer service" listings are phone jobs, so finding remote chat jobs, or other non-phone customer service jobs, takes some filtering. These steps work on any job board:
- Search by channel words, not just "chat". Try "chat agent", "live chat", "web chat", "digital support", "email support", "messaging" and "written support". Advance Auto Parts called its role "Digital Support", and Norwegian used "Web Chat Consultant".
- Read the duties, not the title. A "Chat Support" title can still include calls, so look for "inbound calls" or "phone queue" in the requirements.
- Check the equipment list. A required headset usually means voice work. Inktel's chat role, for example, requires a USB headset with a microphone and a camera.
- Ask in the first screen. "What share of contacts are chat versus phone?" is a normal question.
The employers in our directory hire mainly for phone queues, and we have not confirmed which of them have chat openings right now. Each card below links to the company's own careers page, which is where you should search for "chat" before applying anywhere else.

Equipment, internet and location rules in chat postings
Chat jobs are not lighter on equipment because you aren't talking. The two chat postings with full technical lists asked for faster internet than several phone employers in our directory, such as Conduent and Alorica, which ask for 10 Mbps down:
- Journeys (temp-to-hire): a desktop or laptop with an SSD and an Intel i5/i7 or AMD Ryzen 5/7 processor, at least 16 GB of RAM, two working monitors, an external mouse, and a wired Ethernet connection of at least 50 Mbps down and 5 Mbps up. Tablets and MacBook Airs are not allowed.
- Inktel: Windows 10 Professional with no Macs or Chromebooks, a USB headset and a camera, a hard-wired connection of at least 45 Mbps down and 10 Mbps up, shared with no more than three devices.
Location rules matter just as much. The Journeys posting is open to Tennessee residents only, and Advance Auto Parts requires you to live in the Eastern Time Zone. Check this line before you apply.
Schedules follow customers. Journeys lists 40 hours a week in 8-hour shifts across seven days, and Inktel says weekends and evenings may be required.
The Journeys posting also shows why "temp-to-hire" deserves a careful read. It is a 90-day contract with two weeks of paid training and weekly pay, and the possible permanent job afterward is described as onsite employment.
Online chat support jobs that are not what they seem
One listing in our own feed shows how a fake chat job can look.
The listing our filters missed
A "Chat Support Specialist" posting under the name Sutherland Breezy offered $40–$45 an hour for full-time chat and email support with "No experience required". That is roughly double the BLS median of $21.53 for all customer service representatives. The name resembles Sutherland, a large outsourcing company whose work-from-home openings are listed on its own careers site. The posting asked applicants to email a resume to an address at sutherlandbreezy.com. When we checked on October 13, 2026, that website showed a "Website Expired" page, and public domain records showed it was registered on October 10, 2025.
We can't say who posted it, but it matches warning signs on the FTC's job scam page: pay far above the market for little stated work, from a company you cannot verify on its real website. We would not apply. Our scam-pattern filter missed it, so no filter replaces your own check.
Chat moderator, texting and "flirt chat" offers
Offers to work as a "chat moderator", "texting agent" or "flirt chat" operator also circulate. We found no FTC or FBI warning aimed specifically at them, so we won't repeat claims we can't source. The FTC's general red flags apply directly:
- Pay to start. The FTC says honest employers will never ask you to pay to get a job. That includes buying training, a "message package" or a starter account.
- Unsolicited job texts. The FTC says to ignore unexpected job texts, WhatsApp or Telegram messages and not to reply "YES".
- Interviews held only in chat. The FTC lists interviews conducted solely by email or online chat as a red flag, even for chat jobs.
- Deposits to unlock earnings. If an app shows a balance you must pay to withdraw, the FTC calls it a task scam.
Our page on work from home scams has a checker you can run on any offer in a minute.
Where a chat job can lead, and where to apply next
BLS projects employment of customer service representatives to decline 5 percent from 2025 to 2035, yet still expects about 289,500 openings each year as people leave the field. Our count shows how few of those openings are advertised as chat roles, so an agent who can also handle email and phone can apply to far more of them.
The practical path for a beginner looks like this:
- Start wherever you are hired. BLS says the occupation typically needs a high school diploma and short-term on-the-job training of 2 to 4 weeks. Our guide to remote jobs with no experience lists the employers that say they train beginners.
- Ask about moving into chat after training. If you take a phone role, ask your trainer or supervisor whether agents can join chat or email queues later, and what quality scores that takes.
- Build on the writing record. Accurate written support is useful evidence for technical support or customer success roles; see entry level remote jobs.
- Need shorter hours? Only one chat listing in our count was part-time; try our part time remote jobs page.
