Freelance Jobs for Beginners Online: What Pays, What Platforms Take, How to Start
Educational information, not financial, tax or legal advice. Pay figures are published medians and employer postings, not a promise of what you will earn. Read our disclaimer.
Before you look at any freelance jobs for beginners online, look at what the underlying work pays. In May 2025 the Bureau of Labor Statistics put the median at $36.98 an hour for writers and authors, $30.27 for graphic designers, $28.93 for interpreters and translators, $24.58 for proofreaders, $24.36 for bookkeeping clerks and $23.23 for secretaries and administrative assistants. Those are medians for everyone in each occupation, most of them experienced employees, so they mark where a skill can lead rather than what a first gig pays. They do tell you something useful on day one, though: which skills clients value, and what a reasonable rate looks like once you have proof of your work. This guide compares six services you can start selling with no prior clients, quotes the current Upwork and Fiverr fees from their own help pages, and covers getting paid safely. It belongs to our side hustles section, and every fee was read on October 13, 2026.
Six freelance services a beginner can sell, side by side
Most freelance jobs for beginners online fall into the six services below, which share three traits: clients buy them in small pieces, you can show quality with samples instead of a résumé, and the work needs only a computer. The pay column is the BLS May 2025 national median for the matching occupation, not a freelance rate.
| Service | BLS median (May 2025) | Typical first clients | What to put in your portfolio |
|---|---|---|---|
| Writing (blog posts, web copy, newsletters) | $36.98/hour | Small businesses, local services, solo founders | Three short pieces in the style you want to sell |
| Graphic design (logos, social posts, flyers) | $30.27/hour | Cafés, events, creators, small shops | Three mock projects for realistic clients |
| Translation | $28.93/hour | Small exporters, app makers, families with documents | A short before-and-after sample in one language pair |
| Proofreading and editing | $24.58/hour | Self-published authors, small websites, job seekers | One marked-up page showing your corrections |
| Bookkeeping | $24.36/hour | Sole proprietors and very small businesses | A clean sample ledger and a monthly summary |
| Virtual assistance (admin) | $23.23/hour | Coaches, consultants, busy owners | A one-page list of tasks you can take off their plate |

The chart below shows the same medians with annual figures:
| Occupation | Median hourly | Median yearly | Outlook |
|---|---|---|---|
| Writers and authors | $36.98 | $76,910 | 0% 2025-35 (Little or no change) |
| Graphic designers | $30.27 | $62,960 | -2% 2025-35 (Decline) |
| Interpreters and translators | $28.93 | $60,170 | 2% 2025-35 (Slower than average) |
| Bookkeeping, accounting, and auditing clerks | $24.36 | $50,670 | -6% 2025-35 (Decline) |
| Proofreaders and copy markers | $24.58 | $51,120 | – |
| Secretaries and administrative assistants | $23.23 | $48,310 | -2% 2025-35 (Decline) |
Transcription is a seventh option with a lower bar and per-minute pay; Rev, for example, lists $0.40 to $1.10 per audio minute for transcriptionists (Rev). Our data entry remote jobs page covers it alongside other typing work.
How to become a freelancer: your first week, step by step
You do not need a license, a degree or a paid course to become a freelancer in any of the six services above. You need one clear offer, proof you can do it, and a way to get paid.
- Pick one service and one kind of client. "Proofreading for self-published fantasy authors" is easier to sell than "writing and editing."
- Make three samples. Use realistic briefs. Do not use images or text you do not own; Fiverr, for instance, requires gallery images you own and bans copyrighted material taken from the internet (Fiverr Help: Creating a Gig).
- Write a short profile. Say who you help, what you deliver, how fast, and what it costs. Put your samples first.
- Set a starting price with the fee included. If a platform keeps 20%, a $50 project pays you $40. Price so the amount you keep still covers your time.
- Set up how you will be paid. A PayPal account or a bank account linked to the platform, kept separate from your household spending if you can.
- Open a tax savings habit. Move part of every payment aside the day it arrives (the tax section below explains why).
- Send five tailored proposals or pitches. Five careful ones beat fifty copy-pasted ones.
Checklist for the end of the week: one offer sentence, three samples, one profile live, a price list and five pitches sent. If you would like to compare freelancing with other ways to earn from home first, our list of side hustles from home sets out eleven options with costs and pay.
Upwork vs Fiverr: what each platform takes from your pay
The two largest marketplaces for online freelance jobs work differently. On Upwork you send proposals to clients' job posts; on Fiverr you publish fixed-price packages ("Gigs") and clients come to you. Here is what each one charges freelancers, quoted from their help centers on October 13, 2026:
| Upwork | Fiverr | |
|---|---|---|
| Service fee | "Ranges from 0% to 15% per contract"; you see it before you propose, and it is locked once the contract starts | Freelancers "receive 80% of the client's cleared payment" |
| Cost to apply | Proposals use Connects, which "cost $0.15 (USD) each"; the number per job varies | Free to publish a Gig; new freelancers can have up to 4 active |
| Minimum price | Set by you | $5 minimum Gig price (higher in some categories) |
| When money is available | Depends on contract type | After a 14-day clearing period (shorter for Top Rated and Pro) |
| Withdrawing to a US bank | Direct to U.S. Bank is free for freelancers with a US tax address | PayPal: $0 fee, 24 hours, $1 minimum; bank transfer via Payoneer: $1 fee, $20 minimum |
Sources: Upwork fee, Upwork Connects, Upwork bank withdrawals, Fiverr for freelancers, Fiverr Gig rules, Fiverr withdrawals.
How to price around the fee. Upwork's own example: to take home $20 an hour at a 10% fee, charge $22.22; twelve hours bills the client $266.64, the fee is $26.66, and you net $239.98. On Fiverr the arithmetic is simpler. A $50 Gig pays you $40, and a $5 Gig pays you $4.
Which suits a beginner? Fiverr costs nothing to list, which helps if you have samples but no track record. Upwork costs a little per proposal but lets you answer clients who have already described the job and budget. Many freelancers try both. Be suspicious of anyone claiming to represent either platform who asks you for money outside the official fees listed above.
Winning your first three clients
With freelance jobs for beginners online, the first three clients are the hardest because you have no reviews. These steps help you get past that without working for free:
- Start with people who already trust you. Former coworkers, local businesses you buy from, community groups. Tell them exactly what you now offer and for what price.
- Offer a small, fixed-price first project. "One blog post," "one logo concept with two revisions" or "one month of bookkeeping cleanup" is easier to say yes to than an open-ended hourly deal.
- Answer the client's post, not your own résumé. Open a proposal with their problem in one sentence, then show the one sample most like what they need.
- Deliver early and ask for a review. On marketplaces, a first review changes how future clients see your profile. Ask politely at delivery.
- Turn one project into a second. Suggest the next logical piece of work at the end of the first, for example a second article or a social media version of the logo.
- Keep a short results log. Note what you delivered, how fast, and what the client said. It becomes your next proposal.
Avoid "test projects" that ask for substantial unpaid work. A short paid trial is normal; a full article or logo for free is not. Platforms also prohibit some work outright: Fiverr bans services that complete homework or job screening assignments meant to be done without help.
Contracts, deposits and getting paid without getting scammed
Most payment problems come from starting work before money is committed. A few rules protect you whether you work on a platform or directly.
Put scope in writing. List the deliverable, the number of revisions, the deadline, the price and when it is paid. A short email both sides agree to is better than nothing.
On Upwork fixed-price work, wait for funding. Upwork's payment protection depends on the client depositing money first, and it is blunt: "If a milestone isn't funded in advance, we can't help recover payment later." Look for the "Funded" label before you start, and deliver through the Submit Work for Payment button (Upwork Help).
For direct clients, take a deposit. Asking first-time clients for part of the fee up front means neither side carries all the risk.
Refuse overpayments. One of the oldest scams aimed at freelancers is the "client" who sends a check for more than the agreed price and asks you to send back the difference. The FTC warns, "Even if you see the funds in your account, that doesn't mean it's a good check," and by the time the fake is discovered "you're stuck paying the money back to the bank" (FTC: Fake check scams).
Never pay to get work. The FTC says honest employers will never ask you to pay to get a job (FTC: Job scams). The same logic applies to "clients" who want you to buy software, training or equipment from a supplier they name before the project starts.
These scams are not rare. In 2024, reported losses to job and employment agency scams reached $501 million, up from $90 million in 2020, according to the FTC. Our work from home scams guide includes a red-flag checker you can run on any offer.
Freelance jobs from home and your taxes
Freelance income is self-employment income, and no one withholds tax from it. Three IRS rules cover most beginners:
- Self-employment tax of 15.3% (12.4% for Social Security and 2.9% for Medicare) applies once your net earnings from self-employment reach $400 for the year (IRS: Self-employment tax).
- Quarterly estimated payments are generally expected if you will owe $1,000 or more when you file, using Form 1040-ES (IRS: Estimated taxes).
- Report all income. The IRS says "whether or not you receive a Form 1099-K, you must still report any income on your tax return" (IRS: Form 1099-K).
Tax is figured on profit, so track platform fees, Connects, software and equipment you buy for the work. Our step-by-step guide on how to start a side business covers the free EIN from the IRS, separate bank accounts and record-keeping in more detail.
Which beginner skills have the most room to grow
Choosing a service is partly about where it leads. BLS projections for 2025 to 2035 show which of these occupations are growing and which are shrinking:
| Occupation | Projected change, 2025–35 |
|---|---|
| Interpreters and translators | +2% (slower than average) |
| Writers and authors | 0% (little or no change) |
| Graphic designers | -2% (decline) |
| Secretaries and administrative assistants | -2% (decline) |
| Bookkeeping, accounting and auditing clerks | -6% (decline) |
| Proofreaders and copy markers | Not published |
None of this means you cannot earn from a shrinking field; projections describe total employment, not freelance demand from small businesses. It does suggest building toward a specialty. A bookkeeper who also explains the numbers, or a writer who specializes in one industry, is harder to replace than a generalist.
AI-related contract work is a newer path for careful writers and subject experts. DataAnnotation, for example, lists general work from $25 to $50+ an hour but asks for a bachelor's degree or equivalent experience and allows one attempt at its starter assessment (DataAnnotation FAQ).
