Remote Nursing Jobs: 8 Roles, Real Pay Ranges and the License Rules That Decide Where You Can Work

Educational information, not financial, tax or legal advice. Pay figures are published medians and employer postings, not a promise of what you will earn. Read our disclaimer.

Which remote nursing jobs are real, what do they pay, and which license do you need to hold one? Most work-from-home nursing sits on the insurance side of healthcare: case management, utilization review, auditing and triage by phone. It mostly goes to nurses with a few years of acute-care experience. Your license matters as much as your resume, because nurses must be licensed wherever the patient is. Below we go role by role, with today's listings, pay ranges quoted from employers' own postings and the compact-license rules straight from the NCSBN.

Yes, remote nursing work is hiring, but mostly for experienced nurses

Yes, there are hundreds of openings, mostly for experienced nurses with the right license. On October 13, 2026, our count of US-eligible nursing listings posted in the previous 30 days found 324 openings, 316 of them open only to US residents. Only 18 were tagged entry-level (242 were mid-level), and 222 were full-time, 53 contract and 40 part-time.

Of the 122 listings that posted pay, the median annualised range ran from $78,000 at the low end to $105,319 at the high end. Only 8 gave an hourly rate, too few to treat as typical. The Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) May 2025 median for all registered nurses is $46.90 an hour, or $97,550 a year. It projects 6% growth from 2025 to 2035.

Counted by HowToMakeMoneyFromHome.online from the 324 US-eligible nursing listings on Himalayas and Jobicy on Oct 13, 2026, after removing duplicates, expired posts and scam-pattern titles. Pay medians use only listings that state a USD wage; hourly and yearly figures are the employers' own posted ranges. Recounted every day.

The top posters that morning were OptiMindHealth (14 listings), CareHarmony (10), Humana (9), IntellaTriage (9), PharmD Live (8), HireOps Staffing (7), Included Health (7) and Lifelancer (7): a mix of insurers, telehealth and triage services, and staffing firms.

Eight remote nursing roles, one by one

Remote nursing is a group of roles, most of them on the payer (insurance) side of healthcare. Requirements are quoted from employers' own postings, read in October 2026.

Telephonic triage nurse

You assess callers' symptoms and direct them to the right level of care. Shifts often run into evenings and weekends: one IntellaTriage listing on our board read "Remote Hospice Triage RN PT 3:30p-9p + rotating Sat & Sun". Hirers include triage services (IntellaTriage, Gentiva), hospital nurse helplines (Cincinnati Children's) and population-health teams (Geisinger).

Telephonic case management

You follow members with chronic or complex conditions by phone and connect them to resources after discharge. UnitedHealth Group's Telephonic RN Case Manager asks for 3+ years as an RN in a hospital, acute or direct care setting; Elevance Health's Telephonic Nurse Case Manager II asks for 5 years of clinical experience. CVS Health, Included Health and Cardinal Health also hire.

Utilization review and utilization management

You review admissions, treatments or continued stays against clinical criteria such as MCG. CVS Health's Utilization Management Nurse Consultant wants 2+ years of RN experience including 1+ in Med/Surg; Cigna's UM Clinical Reviewer, 2 years in cardiology, oncology, ICU or ER; Centene's Clinical Review Nurse, 2+ years of acute care.

Prior authorization

A branch of utilization management: deciding whether a service is covered before it happens. CVS lists prior authorization experience as preferred, and Molina's Care Review Clinician (Remote) counts it toward 2 years of required health care experience and is open to RNs and LPNs.

Care coordination

You keep high-risk patients' care on track by phone, message and video. Teladoc Health's Nurse, Care Coordinator asks for 1–3 years of clinical experience plus health care customer service, and says it will not sponsor visas.

Nurse auditor

You check records and coding against claims. Humana's Nurse Auditor asks for 2 consecutive years of critical care within the last 5 years, or 2 years of DRG inpatient auditing, and an RN license in your state of residence.

Telehealth nurse

Telehealth nurse jobs support virtual clinics, from mental health to oncology navigation. Many virtual-clinic postings on our board were for nurse practitioners, who need a separate APRN license per state. An RN example: Daymark Health's National Virtual Oncology Nurse Navigator (All States), listed at $85,000–$100,000.

Nurse educator and health coach

You teach members to manage conditions, or teach students online. Cigna's part-time RN Health Coach (30 hours, Texas) wants 3+ years of RN experience and 1+ year in health coaching or education. Ascend Learning and several universities posted part-time educator and adjunct roles on our board.

The licensing rule that decides where you can work

Your license, not your address, decides which remote nursing jobs you can take. The rule comes from the Nurse Licensure Compact (NLC), run by the National Council of State Boards of Nursing (NCSBN).

"Nurses are required to be licensed in the state where the patient is located at the time service is provided." (NLC FAQs, read October 13, 2026)

NCSBN's guidance for nurses says this applies to in-person and telehealth care alike. So a triage nurse in Ohio who takes a call from a patient in Texas needs the right to practice in Texas.

What the compact license does

The NLC lets a nurse hold one multistate license with the ability to practice in all compact states and territories, in person or by telehealth, without separate licenses. From the NLC's own pages:

  • It covers RNs and LPN/VNs only. The FAQ says "The NLC pertains to RN and LPN/VN licenses only."
  • APRNs are not covered. "An APRN must hold an individual APRN license in each state of APRN practice."
  • Residence matters. "You may only hold a compact license if you legally declare residency in a compact state."
  • Moving states. Nurses who move between compact states must apply for a license in their new primary state of residence within 60 days.

How many states are in it

The NLC home page says that "43 jurisdictions are currently part of the NLC" (read October 13, 2026). Its current map lists implementation dates, including Pennsylvania (July 7, 2025) and Connecticut (October 1, 2025). Guam is partly implemented. Massachusetts and the U.S. Virgin Islands have enacted the compact but have no implementation date yet, so a compact license isn't available there until they finish.

States absent from that map's list include California, New York, Illinois, Michigan, Minnesota, Nevada, Oregon, Hawaii and Alaska, plus the District of Columbia. If you live in one of them, the FAQ says you "can hold as many single-state licenses as required to practice." PharmD Live, for example, posted one remote care-manager role for compact-license nurses and a separate one for nurses licensed in non-compact states.

Why so many "remote" listings only take one state

Even with a compact license, many work from home nursing jobs take residents of one state only. The postings we read show three reasons.

  1. State Medicaid contracts. Health plans that run a state's Medicaid program often want nurses in that state. Centene's Care Manager (RN) role required residence in Georgia. Molina posted roles marked "Must Live in Texas" and "must reside in Michigan".
  2. Office proximity. Elevance Health's telephonic postings say candidates must live within reasonable commuting distance of a listed office, such as Atlanta, Tampa or Indianapolis, and its roles include required in-person training.
  3. Single-state licenses. Cardinal Health's oncology care manager role is listed as nationwide but requires a current California RN license and works 8:30–5:00 Pacific time.

UnitedHealth Group shows both patterns: its telephonic case manager can live anywhere in an NLC state, while other UHG nurse postings say "Remote in Georgia ONLY". Read the location line first.

What remote RNs are paid: posted ranges side by side

RN remote jobs pay roughly in line with the national RN median, with wide job-grade ranges. Here is what employers published in October 2026 postings, quoted from their careers pages.

Employer and rolePosted pay
UnitedHealth Group, Telephonic RN Case Manager$60,200–$107,400 a year (full-time)
CVS Health, Utilization Management Nurse Consultant$29.10–$62.32 an hour (base), bonus eligible
CVS Health, Case Manager, Registered Nurse$54,095–$155,538 a year
Humana, Nurse Auditor (Remote Nationwide)$78,400–$107,800 a year
The Cigna Group, UM Clinical Reviewer Senior Analyst$31–$52 an hour, plus annual bonus eligibility
Elevance Health, Telephonic Nurse Case Manager II$75,680–$119,196 a year
Centene, Clinical Review Nurse – Concurrent Review$27.02–$48.55 an hour
Teladoc Health, Nurse, Care Coordinator$80,000–$88,000 a year base
Cardinal Health, Individualized Care Nurse Care Manager$68,500–$107,580 a year
Included Health, Nurse Care Manager, Adult$74,810–$104,730 a year base

These are job-grade ranges from single postings.

For comparison, here are the BLS May 2025 national medians for registered nurses, LPN/LVNs and medical records specialists (a non-clinical health-information occupation).

OccupationMedian hourlyMedian yearly
Registered nurses$46.90$97,550
Licensed practical and licensed vocational nurses$30.96$64,400
Medical records specialists$24.59$51,140
Median pay for all US workers in each occupation (remote and on-site), May 2025. Source: U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, Occupational Outlook Handbook / OEWS — each name links to its BLS page.

Work-from-home options for LPNs and LVNs

LPNs and LVNs have fewer remote options than RN work from home jobs offer, but the compact license covers them too. The BLS May 2025 median for licensed practical and licensed vocational nurses is $30.96 an hour ($64,400 a year), with 3% projected growth from 2025 to 2035.

  • Medical review. Molina Healthcare's Medical Review Nurse (LVN/LPN) requires an active, unrestricted LPN/LVN license, accepts a compact license where states allow, and asks for 2 years of clinical nursing including 1 year of utilization or claims review. Molina's Care Review Clinician (Remote) is open to RNs or LPNs.
  • Utilization review. Personify Health posted a Utilization Review Nurse – LVN / LPN role on our board, and Centene's clinical review posting lists LPN state licensure among accepted licenses.
  • Care coordination. CareHarmony posted remote LPN/LVN day-shift roles on our board at $21 an hour, and one requiring Massachusetts licensure at $23.
  • Contract and weekend work. Northwell posted a six-month remote LPN contract, and Cadence a Part-Time Weekend Alert LPN role.

CareHarmony names the required state license in each title, which is worth copying as a habit: check the license line first.

How much experience you need, and how new grads get there

Expect to need one to five years of hands-on nursing before a remote employer will hire you. Only 18 of the 324 listings in our October 13 count were tagged entry-level. The bars we found: 1 year for Elevance Health's Clinical Review Nurse I (with an associate degree in nursing); 1–3 years for Teladoc's care coordinator; 2 years for CVS, Cigna and Centene review roles and Humana's auditor; 3 years for UnitedHealth Group case management; 5 years for Elevance and CVS case management and Included Health.

A path from bedside to remote

  1. Build acute-care time. Med/Surg, ICU and ER are what review postings name most.
  2. Learn the criteria employers cite. CVS and Cigna postings mention MCG; Cigna adds ASAM for behavioral health.
  3. Try an internal move. Hospital case management or utilization review builds the experience insurers ask for.
  4. Fix the license footprint. Make your license multistate if you live in a compact state, or target employers that sponsor additional licenses.

New graduates who need income from home meanwhile can look at non-nursing work in entry level remote jobs.

The home office rules employers write into nursing postings

Remote nurses handle protected health information, so employers write strict workspace rules into their postings:

  • Internet. Humana requires at least 25 Mbps down / 10 up; Cigna, cable or fiber at 10/5; Cardinal Health, 15/5 over DSL, cable or fiber, with no satellite, Wi-Fi or cellular.
  • Privacy. Humana asks for a dedicated space that protects member PHI; Cardinal, a quiet, private space.
  • Equipment. Cardinal provides the computer and you provide the internet. Humana pays a bi-weekly internet payment to associates in California, Illinois, Montana or South Dakota.
  • Travel and checks. Humana may require occasional office travel, and Elevance requires in-person training. Elevance requires COVID-19 and flu vaccination for certain member-facing roles, and Cigna may decline tobacco or nicotine users where legal.

Fake nursing jobs: what scammers get wrong

Nurses get the same job scams as everyone else. The FTC and FBI warning signs in our scam data apply directly:

  • Paying to start. The FTC says honest employers never ask you to pay to get a job. Compare UnitedHealth Group, which says it pays the fees for additional state licenses.
  • Personal details before an interview. The FTC says real employers won't ask for your Social Security, driver's license or bank number before interviewing and hiring you.
  • Chat-only interviews. The FTC lists email- or chat-only interviews as a red flag. Humana, for example, names its interview platform (HireVue).
  • A listing missing from the employer's site. The FBI warns that scammers post fake openings and spoof company websites, so find the job on the insurer's own careers page.

Is remote nursing the right move for you?

Remote nursing suits nurses who are comfortable with screens, documentation and phone-based judgment. It tends to fit you if you have at least two years of acute-care or specialty experience, a multistate license (or an employer that sponsors extra licenses), a private room with wired broadband, and a schedule that can follow a set time zone. It is a harder fit for new graduates, for APRNs hoping one license will cover every state, and for nurses in non-compact states chasing national roles.

While you build experience, related work exists: healthcare customer service roles, such as Conduent's and Alorica's healthcare reps, are covered in our guide to customer service remote jobs, and shorter-hour options in part time remote jobs. For every way to earn without leaving home, start with how to make money from home, or browse the remote jobs hub.

Questions people ask

How do I get a remote nursing job with no remote experience?
Lead with clinical experience, not remote experience. Most employers ask for 1 to 5 years of nursing, often in acute care, while remote experience is at most a plus; Teladoc lists prior virtual work as preferred, not required. Target review or care coordination roles that match your specialty, and make sure your license covers the states the role serves.
Do I need a compact license to work as a remote nurse?
Not always, but it widens your options. The NLC says nurses must be licensed where the patient is located at the time of service. Multi-state roles, such as UnitedHealth Group's telephonic case manager, ask you to live in a compact state; single-state roles need only that state's license. UHG says it pays fees for additional state licenses.
Which states are not in the Nurse Licensure Compact?
As of October 13, 2026, the NLC says 43 jurisdictions are part of the compact. Its map does not list California, New York, Illinois, Michigan, Minnesota, Nevada, Oregon, Hawaii, Alaska or the District of Columbia. Massachusetts and the U.S. Virgin Islands have enacted the compact but have not implemented it. Check nursecompact.com for the current map, because states join over time.
How much do remote RNs make?
In our October 13, 2026 count, nursing listings that posted pay had a median annualised range of $78,000 to $105,319. Individual postings ranged from Centene's $27.02–$48.55 an hour to CVS Health's $54,095–$155,538 a year for a case manager. The BLS May 2025 median for all registered nurses is $46.90 an hour, or $97,550 a year.
Can LPNs or LVNs work from home?
Yes, mostly in medical review, utilization review and care coordination. Molina Healthcare hires remote LVN/LPN medical review nurses, and CareHarmony posted remote LPN/LVN day-shift roles at $21 to $23 an hour on our board. The Nurse Licensure Compact covers LPN/VN licenses, so a multistate license helps. The BLS May 2025 median for LPN/LVNs is $30.96 an hour.
Can new grad nurses work remotely?
Rarely. Only 18 of 324 nursing listings in our October 13, 2026 count were tagged entry-level. The lowest experience bar we found was 1 year, for Elevance Health's Clinical Review Nurse I. Most payers want 2 to 5 years, often in acute care, ICU or Med/Surg. Plan on building bedside experience first and moving into case management or utilization review.
What does a telehealth nurse do?
A telehealth nurse cares for patients by phone or video: assessing symptoms, educating and coordinating care for a virtual clinic. The NLC applies the same license rule as in person, so you must be licensed where the patient is. Many virtual-clinic postings are for nurse practitioners, who need an individual APRN license in each state.
Does the compact license cover nurse practitioners?
No. The NLC FAQ says it pertains to RN and LPN/VN licenses only, and that an APRN must hold an individual APRN license in each state of APRN practice. That's why telehealth NP postings often name a single state, such as Nolia Health's Arizona and Idaho ARNP roles. A separate APRN Compact exists, and the NLC points nurses to aprncompact.com for it.
Do remote nursing jobs include weekends or nights?
Many do. CVS Health says utilization management runs 24/7, so schedules include holidays and evenings, and Centene's review role rotates weekends and holidays. Triage roles often run into evenings. Others are weekday roles: UnitedHealth Group's case manager works Monday to Friday, 8 to 5 local time, possibly with one evening a week.
