Side Hustles From Home: 11 Options, What They Cost and What They Pay
Educational information, not financial, tax or legal advice. Pay figures are published medians and employer postings, not a promise of what you will earn. Read our disclaimer.
Most people start looking at side hustles from home at the same moment: it is 8:30 at night, the dishes are done, and the kitchen table is yours for two hours. You have a laptop, a phone and maybe a skill you have never charged for. This page is the slower, more useful version of the ads in your feed. For each of the eleven options below we list what the work actually is, what it costs to start, how the money arrives, a pay figure we can trace to a source (the Bureau of Labor Statistics where it tracks the occupation, the platform's own page where it does not) and one concrete first step. It sits inside our side hustles section, and every number on it was checked on October 13, 2026.
1. Online tutoring: the most hiring we saw this week
Tutoring means teaching a school subject, a test or a language over video. You can tutor through a platform that finds students and sets the rate, or find private students and set your own price.
- Startup cost: usually nothing new. A computer with a webcam, a headset and a stable connection cover most platforms.
- How pay works: by the hour or by the session. Platforms pay you after each lesson or on a fixed cycle; private students pay you directly.
- Pay reference: the BLS median for tutors was $20.84 an hour ($43,350 a year) in May 2025 (BLS OEWS May 2025). That median covers all tutors, in person and online, not only beginners.
- Demand right now: on October 13, 2026, our count of US-eligible part-time remote listings found FindTutors posting 25 openings, more than any other company in that feed.
First step: choose one subject and one level you could teach tomorrow without notes, for example middle-school algebra or conversational Spanish for adults. If you are a student yourself, our guide to online jobs for college students covers how tutoring fits around a class schedule.
2. Freelance writing: highest median on this list, slowest start
Freelance writers produce blog posts, product descriptions, newsletters and website copy for businesses without a full-time writer.
- Startup cost: none beyond a computer and a word processor.
- How pay works: per piece, per word or per hour, agreed before you start.
- Pay reference: the BLS median for writers and authors was $36.98 an hour ($76,910 a year) in May 2025, with employment projected at 0% change from 2025 to 2035 (BLS Occupational Outlook Handbook). That figure describes the whole occupation, most of it experienced staff and authors. Treat it as a ceiling to grow toward, not a starting rate.
- Platform cut: if you find clients on Upwork, its freelancer service fee "ranges from 0% to 15% per contract," and you see the exact percentage before you send a proposal (Upwork Help).
First step: write three short samples in the style you want to sell, such as a 600-word how-to article, a product page and a short email. Our page on freelance jobs for beginners online walks through landing the first three clients.
3. Proofreading: a quieter cousin of writing
Proofreaders catch typos, grammar slips and formatting errors in text someone else has written: reports, course materials, websites, self-published books.
- Startup cost: nothing; a free or paid style reference helps but is optional.
- How pay works: per page, per word or per project.
- Pay reference: the BLS median for proofreaders and copy markers was $24.58 an hour ($51,120 a year) in May 2025 (BLS OEWS May 2025). BLS does not publish a growth outlook for this occupation.
First step: pick one document type you understand well, such as resumes, small-business websites or self-published novels, and proofread a public sample (with permission) to show a before-and-after. Avoid academic work that a student is supposed to complete on their own; Fiverr, for one, strictly prohibits academic dishonesty.
4. Virtual assistant work: selling your organization skills
A virtual assistant handles the small administrative jobs that pile up for busy owners: inbox triage, calendar booking, travel research, data cleanup, invoices, customer replies. Clients are usually solo owners and small agencies.
- Startup cost: a computer, a phone and familiarity with common office tools.
- How pay works: hourly, or a monthly retainer for a set number of hours.
- Pay reference: the BLS median for secretaries and administrative assistants was $23.23 an hour ($48,310 a year) in May 2025, with employment projected to fall 2% from 2025 to 2035 (BLS Occupational Outlook Handbook).
First step: write down five specific tasks you can do well today, for example "I schedule appointments and send reminders" rather than "admin support." A short list of concrete tasks is easier for a client to say yes to than a general offer.
5. Bookkeeping: reliable demand from small businesses, high trust bar
Bookkeepers record income and expenses, reconcile bank accounts and keep the books ready for an accountant at tax time. Many very small businesses need a few hours of this a month.
- Startup cost: low, though you will need to learn the accounting software your clients already use.
- How pay works: hourly, or a flat monthly fee per client.
- Pay reference: the BLS median for bookkeeping, accounting and auditing clerks was $24.36 an hour ($50,670 a year) in May 2025, and BLS projects employment to decline 6% from 2025 to 2035 (BLS Occupational Outlook Handbook).
Because you will see a client's bank data, expect to be asked for references.
First step: practice on your own household finances for a month in one accounting tool, then offer a fixed-price monthly cleanup to one small business you already know.
6. Transcription: easy to start, paid by audio minute
Transcriptionists turn recorded audio and video into text. General transcription is beginner-friendly; legal and medical transcription expect experience. The key detail most ads skip: pay is usually per minute of audio, not per minute you work, and a clear minute of audio takes several minutes to type and check.
| Platform | Published pay (read Oct 2026) | Entry bar |
|---|---|---|
| Rev | $0.40–$1.10 per audio/video minute for transcription | English and grammar test plus a sample; currently a waitlist |
| TranscribeMe | Starts at $15–$22 per audio hour; says average monthly earnings are $250 | Entrance exam; 18+ |
| GoTranscript | Up to $1.75 per audio/video minute | English test plus a transcription test; hiring status was contradictory in October 2026 |
Sources: Rev freelancers page, TranscribeMe freelancers page, GoTranscript jobs page.
For context, the BLS median for medical transcriptionists was $19.43 an hour in May 2025, with employment projected to fall 4% from 2025 to 2035 (BLS Occupational Outlook Handbook).
- Startup cost: a computer and decent headphones.
- First step: apply to two platforms at once, since waitlists are common, and practice on public-domain audio while you wait. Our data entry remote jobs page lists more transcription and typing companies.
7. AI data annotation and rating: real money, real screening
AI companies pay people to rate chatbot answers, write test prompts, label images and check facts. It is one of the few side hustles from home where a published hourly rate is common, but the better-paying platforms screen hard.
- DataAnnotation lists General work starting at $25–$50+ an hour in one part of its FAQ and $25–$30+ in another, paid through PayPal. The general track asks for a bachelor's degree or equivalent experience, and the one-hour Starter Assessment can be taken only once (DataAnnotation FAQ).
- Prolific runs research studies and AI evaluation tasks. Its help center says researchers must pay at least $8 an hour and are recommended to pay $12; new participants join a waitlist, and you can cash out to PayPal once you have $6 (Prolific participant help).
- CrowdGen by Appen says each project has its own location and qualification rules and that it will never ask you to pay to join (CrowdGen). On October 13, 2026, our count of US-eligible data entry listings found CrowdGen by Appen posting 10, more than any other company in that feed.
Startup cost: nothing. Watch out: fake "task" apps copy this exact pitch, then ask you to deposit money, often crypto, to unlock earnings. The FTC says paying to get money you have supposedly earned is a sure sign of a scam. Read our work from home scams page before you sign up anywhere you found through a text message.
First step: prepare for the one-shot assessments the way you would for a test: read the instructions twice, and do not rush.
8. Translation: worth it only if you are truly bilingual
Translators turn written text from one language into another; subtitle translators do the same for video. Clients expect native-level fluency in the language you translate into, and strong reading skill in the language you translate from.
- Startup cost: none beyond a computer.
- How pay works: per word for documents, per minute of video for subtitles.
- Pay reference: the BLS median for interpreters and translators was $28.93 an hour ($60,170 a year) in May 2025, with employment projected to grow 2% from 2025 to 2035 (BLS Occupational Outlook Handbook). Rev lists subtitle translator pay of $1.70–$4.00+ per minute, varying by language (Rev).
First step: choose a single direction, for example Spanish into English, and one subject area such as product descriptions or legal forms.
9. Graphic design: a portfolio does the selling
Freelance designers make logos, social media graphics, slide decks, menus, flyers and simple brand kits. Small businesses buy these one at a time.
- Startup cost: design software (free tools exist) and a computer that can run it.
- How pay works: per project or per package.
- Pay reference: the BLS median for graphic designers was $30.27 an hour ($62,960 a year) in May 2025, with employment projected to fall 2% from 2025 to 2035 (BLS Occupational Outlook Handbook).
- Platform cut: on Fiverr, freelancers "receive 80% of the client's cleared payment," and funds wait through a 14-day clearing period before you can withdraw (Fiverr Help). The minimum Gig price is $5, and new freelancers can have up to four Gigs active (Fiverr Help: Creating a Gig).
First step: make three portfolio pieces for imaginary but realistic clients, such as a bakery menu, a plumber's flyer and a podcast cover. Use only images you own or created.
10. Selling used items and flipping: the fastest first dollar
Selling what you already own is the one option here with no application and no waitlist. Flipping, buying underpriced items at thrift stores or yard sales and reselling them, is the same skill with your own money at risk.
What you keep depends almost entirely on the platform. Here is a $40 sale with no shipping or sales tax added, using each platform's own fee page as read on October 13, 2026:
| Platform | Fee rule | You keep on $40 |
|---|---|---|
| Facebook Marketplace, local pickup | No Meta selling fee for in-person payment | $40.00 |
| OfferUp, local | No fee on in-person sales (shipping ended in 2025) | $40.00 |
| Mercari | 10% of item price plus buyer-paid shipping | $36.00 |
| Poshmark | 20% on sales of $15 or more | $32.00 |
| eBay (most categories) | 13.6% of the total sale plus $0.40 per order | $34.16 |
On eBay and on Facebook's shipped orders, the percentage is charged on the whole transaction, including buyer-paid shipping and sales tax, so the real cut on the item price is a little higher than the table shows.
- Startup cost: $0 to sell your own things; for flipping, whatever you spend on inventory.
- Taxes: the IRS says that "whether or not you receive a Form 1099-K, you must still report any income on your tax return," including personal items sold at a gain (IRS).
First step: list five items you have not used in a year, starting with bulky ones for local pickup. Our guide on where to sell used items has a fee calculator and a platform-by-platform breakdown.
11. Pet sitting and dog walking: local, physical, fee-based
Pet sitting is the only side hustle on this list that is not done at a desk, but much of it happens at home: drop-in visits nearby, or boarding a dog in your own house. Rover is the largest marketplace, and its help center is unusually clear about the costs.
- Age and status: you must be at least 18, and sitters "are considered independent contractors" running their own small business (Rover Help).
- Startup cost: Rover charges a $49–$79 profile review fee that varies by location (Rover Help: Is Rover free?).
- Platform cut: Rover "applies a 20% service fee per booking, which means you take home 80% of your earnings," though it notes some US sitters may be in a pilot with different fees (Rover Help: service fees).
- Payout timing: payments appear in your Rover account two days after you complete a service, then go to your bank by direct deposit (Rover Help).
You set your own rates, and Rover does not publish typical earnings, so we do not quote one. If you would rather not pay the review fee, neighbors, coworkers and local community groups are a free way to find a first client.
First step: decide which services you can offer reliably (walks, drop-ins or overnight boarding) and how many pets your home can safely handle at once.
How to pick the side hustle that fits your evenings
All eleven are side hustle ideas to make extra money without leaving home, but the best choice is the one that matches the time, skills and money you already have:
| If this sounds like you | Start with |
|---|---|
| You need a first dollar this week | Selling used items locally |
| You type fast and focus well with headphones | Transcription, then AI rating |
| You have a degree and like careful reading | AI data annotation or proofreading |
| You are strong in one school subject | Online tutoring |
| You are organized and good on email | Virtual assistant work |
| You speak two languages at native level | Translation |
| You can show three good designs or articles | Graphic design or freelance writing |
| You love animals and are home most evenings | Pet sitting |
Usability testing is a small extra rather than a hustle on its own. UserTesting says reward amounts "vary and depend on factors like test type, duration, and customer demand," pays only through PayPal, and usually sends payment 14 days after a completed test (UserTesting).
Here is how the BLS medians compare for the occupations behind these side hustles:
| Occupation | Median hourly | Median yearly | Outlook |
|---|---|---|---|
| Tutors | $20.84 | $43,350 | – |
| Writers and authors | $36.98 | $76,910 | 0% 2025-35 (Little or no change) |
| Proofreaders and copy markers | $24.58 | $51,120 | – |
| Bookkeeping, accounting, and auditing clerks | $24.36 | $50,670 | -6% 2025-35 (Decline) |
| Graphic designers | $30.27 | $62,960 | -2% 2025-35 (Decline) |
| Interpreters and translators | $28.93 | $60,170 | 2% 2025-35 (Slower than average) |
Two rules hold for every option above. First, nobody legitimate makes you pay to be hired; marketplace and review fees like Rover's are a cost to weigh, but a "starter kit" for a job is a warning sign. Second, side hustle income is self-employment income. The IRS says you owe self-employment tax, 15.3% for Social Security and Medicare, once net earnings from self-employment reach $400 (IRS). Once a side hustle starts to feel like a business, read how to start a side business for the free EIN, the bank account and quarterly taxes. And if you are still deciding between a side hustle and a regular remote job, our main guide to how to make money from home lays out both paths.
